I put the ax to my red russian kale plant that has been in the ground since late March. Over the season we pulled several pounds off this single plant and this cultivator will be planted in my garden again. The base of the main stem was over 50 mm in diameter and the plant was taller than my 15 month old kid. At this point in the year we've been down to about 14 F for a few nights and we've had an inch of snow accumulation, and the changes in the flavor after dropping below freezing are significant. There were several sad old leaf that went to the compost rather than the skillet but over all the leafs were great looking and we pulled two pounds off it for this meal. And yes both my 3 year old and my 15 month old eat braised kale. Usually when cooking it I add some finely sliced shallots and, occasionally, some chicken broth then splash it with white wine vinegar just before pulling it form the heat.

I like it raw, but sauteed, braised, and thrown in soups, etc, is also yummy.
I even like the more flowering decorative types
Red Russian is really hardy, too, such a good cropper.
