I was appalled at the way the purchased bird feeders allowed so much of it to be scattered and wasted. I experimented until i came up with the ones in the pictures, which do not waste any feed.
For the oil seed feeder, I drilled 3/8th" holes and then carefully cut out the middle until the seed could be picked out with my knife blade fairly easy, but did not allow the seed to cascade. The vertical is about a 1/4, but should be cut to match your feed. The older birds soon learn to use it, and pull out extra for the young ones until they learn.

On the mixed grain feeder, it does not work quite as perfectly as the other one, as the slot has to be big enough for the Milo and Wheat, or Cracked Corn. So the birds will peck that out to get to the Millet which they seem to prefer. When too much of the large grain is out on the tray, i just lay the feeder down until the birds clean up the Milo.

Time will tell. Squirrels have very talented little 'hands'.
