potatoes - pest eating them before being dug

Well I did a 45' row of potatoes at my church community garden. Along that row I did kinnebec (~22 ft), ponitac red (~15 feet), and german butterball (~8 feet )in planting order from south to north. In this I harvested about 35 pounds.

The kinebecs and butterballs were fine but some of the reds had been munched on. The munching was on the deeper set potatoes - none were up near the surface - and nearly perfect hemispheres about 10 mm (almost 1/2") in diameter. When digging I did find two large white grubs. I showed these to one of the old guys at the garden and he had never seen anything like it and had no clue what would cause it. These are clearly not shovel damage.

This is about the best photo I got. I had rinsed these off and they're still a little wet.

Any thoughts on what caused this? Suspect the grubs?

Voles & moles are a common problem in your area (especially with heavy mulch) & potatoes are one of their favorite foods. Click on the bottle below...
