Every year I wake up to read messages & posts (not here) thanking veterans for their service. And every year I feel a need to educate the 83% of Americans that are clueless as to the significance of today by telling them that Memorial Day honors those that made the ultimate sacrifice on the field of battle.
I also cringe at "Happy Memorial Day". My standard response is to tell them that it was never a 'happy day' for the person killed or his family, not then & not now. I also tell them to walk the cemetery, look at the head/foot stones of the veterans... and ask them if it's a "happy day".
