garlic and onions in the south

My mom asked me about growing garlic and a source for seed stock. The biggest problem in the conversation is translating from northern Illinois to southern coastal South Carolina.

1) When should garlic go in the ground in the Beaufort SC / Hilton Head SC / Savannah GA area?

2) What sources would be good for down there?

I've always bought from northern but national suppliers - like Johnnys and Botanical Interests.

Any reason not to send her to something like Southern Exposure seed exchange - except they look to be wackjobs banding together to sue Monsanto.

Filaree Garlic Farm is where I got mine. They were great to deal with & answered all the questions I had.

There are many different types of garlic & many of them will do well in a wide range of climates.
