Rings on/Rings off

I was talking to a friend and mentioned I had started canning.He asked if I left the rings on after the jars had come out of the hot water bath and cooled.I told him I left the rings on.He had a long explanation that was dangerous.I'm now a little confused. What do you all do? Thanks..
