Been tilling & raking the last 2 days... just taking a break before resuming... I need to get as much done as possible before the rain hits tonight (80% chance).

Ordered 3 of the Rainbird nozzle packs so that I can balance the spray-heads as they will have anywhere from a 90 degree rotation, up to a 360 degree rotation. I almost overlooked this...

Also ordered (300) 2.5" round labels to have on hand for the upcoming canning season.

Still counting rain drops. Close to 3 inches now, which is twice as much from this storm as we have had in total since last May.

Lawn is soft enough now that i will be able to aerate it with my plug cutter, in the next few days.

finally got the blackberries pruned back, seamed that every weekend in the past it has either been raining, snowing or just down right cold to even think about doing anything outside. took 4 hours but it's done.

this years extreme cold did take it's toll on them lots of the tips are burnt and lost 10 of the original mothers the the rest of the mothers in these 2 rows are not looking that happy either. thinking about making this their last year since they are 12+ years old..

Major,
That sure looks neat, but referring to Mother plants sounds different than mine. I may have a chance to learn something here. My plants put out lots of suckers each year, the canes grow without much, maybe no, branching the first year, then the second year they branch, blossom and bear fruit and then die, so my plants never seem to get more than two years old.
And then, it has been so warm this winter that the leaves have never turned brown, so they are still as green as they were last September.
As i mentioned earlier, these berries are about twice as big as the wild blackberries in Oregon, and the canes are very stiff and upright. Some growing over 8 fee tall and up to 5/8 or 3/4 diameter.
Questions. How old are the canes you saved? Do your canes die out after bearing? When you refer to Mother Plants, do you mean jiust the stumps? Do you have lots of suckers coming up from root tips away from the clump, or do your suckers just come up around the base?

As i said before, my start was from plants crawling in under a solid board fence, so i did not have a variety name or info on them.

Thanks,
ernie

The 'new canes' from last year are the ones that will bear fruit this year. Once we are done harvesting the fruit, I cut them off at the ground & new canes will jump up. These are the ones that bear next year... it's a never ending cycle here.

Sam, That is the way mine grow, but Major's mention of Mother plants made me wonder if other blackberries were different from mine. there are lots of similar berries, and i have no idea what variety i have.

If my raspberries do well here i think i am going to remove the blackberries and put raspberries there, too.

I have sure been enjoying the semi dried figs and Himrod raisins on my morning cereal this year, and hope to dry more of both this summer.

Man those blackberries look good. I sure wish I had more room to do more stuff in my garden.

It's raining and cold here by the coast. I know a few people that planted their garden already....and they spent the last 2 days scrambling around trying to cover plants.

WR Ranch, do you have a target date to get your plants in the ground this year? The weather here at the coast is more mild than where you're at, but shouldn't be too much different.

I have a moving target. LOL!!! In a normal year, I would start around March 15th... Last year it was pretty cool spring & I didn't start until March 26th. This year may be the same as last year, although I'm playing it by ear... I have over $110 invested in seeds & I don't want to have the expense of replanting. Some of the 'old timers' are saying to hold off because we will have hard frosts in April this year...

Did some more tilling & raking today. Hope to install the bull panels next week so I can finish up the irrigation system. Getting close to planting time...

Suppose to rain here the next 3 days.

I turned over the dirt in my beds this weekend. Also planted an orange tree that has been sitting in the same black bucket since we bought it last spring! Haha.... I just couldnt decide where I wanted to plant it.

I'm considering planting my garden this coming weekend....

Waiting for ours to dry out so I can install the bull panels. I so ready to plant, it isn't funny... I really hope the garden does well this year with all the work we've put into enlarging it.

I hope to start moving stuff out of the greenhouse after this next front passes, the porches seems so 'empty' when we sit on them.

I shopped for melon vines yesterday, but not available yet. Tomato plants are, but not some of the varieties i prefer. Ground is warm enough, but winter onions need some more time, so will not be able to plant anything but Melons and Tomatoes until i harvest the onions.

Planted nasturtium seeds in the pots on the back porch. Not much, but it's something... maybe tomorrow it will be dry enough to add thew final amendments to the dirt in the garden.

Tilled in compost yesterday, broke down and planted a few peppers and tomatoes - not many.. couldn't help myself. I'm pretty much ready to go as soon as I'm comfortable with the weather. Found flats of marigolds at the local nursery on sale for 3 dollars so I grabbed some of those to spread around the vegetables. Got a kumquat to plant today and a Mexican oleander as soon as my wife decides where she wants them.

Added the last of the amendments & tilled them in. Brought the re-bar over from the barn so I'm ready to go (probably start on Monday as it's suppose to rain again this weekend).

Now that the last cold front has pasted, I pulled the hanging fern baskets out of the greenhouse & hung them back up on the front & back porches. Also pulled the spider plants out & put them on the back porch. I'll get the last of the 'porch stuff' out tomorrow... At least it's starting to look like spring here.

I really wanted to plant this weekend but it was raining off and on the whole time so I didnt get it done. It was 44 degrees this morning when I woke up so Im thinking that after this cool weather passes I'll plant one day this week. I'm really gettin anxious to get my veggies in the ground!

I'm waiting on the soil temperature to rise to at least 60 degrees. Plant them when its too cold & you increase the chance of them failing & having to do it again with inferior plants (as all the better plants/varieties have already been bought).

I bought a couple of City Picker earth boxes at Home Depot. A friend is going to loan me an EARTH BOX and i bought a City PICKER for him, and we are going to do some comparison testing. I have not seen an Earth Box yet, just pictures, but i like what i see about the City PicKer boxes.

I have over a foot of new growth on grape vines, but fruit trees show some signs of confusion, leafing out on one side, different places, etc. And some baby grapes on one vine.

Started watering lawn as the Rain water has about dried out.

Put together my raised garden box. Of course Sunday was raining, snowing and cold all day and of course I didn't get to put the box in the ground. Will get pictures up soon.

Still have some standing water/really soft spots around the garden so I didn't do any tellis welding today as I don't want to leave big ruts from driving on it. Will re-evaluate again tomorrow.
