We have growth!!

Wont be long before we start picking veggies! We have squash, tomatoes, bell peppers, and jalapeno peppers all showing themselves. We had a little cool snap last week, but now that its warming back up things should really start to take off.

Watered everything (garden, hanging baskets, pots & trees) again this morning... the wind is constant... The hanging baskets are once again 'hung' on the ground.

Planted another Picker Box of Baby Beets. First time i have used the pelleted seed. Thanks, Major. A friend brought me over an Earth Box to compare with the Picker Box, and the only difference i can see is the Picker Box costs half as much. First time i have used either one, but first batch of carrots and Beets look very good.
Growing out a couple of Nine Bark trees, so repotted into five gallon containers. Needed to water every day as MG potting soil was just staying barely damp, and i did not like the idea of flushing out all the nutrients. So used some aluminun baking pans as saucers and retained about an inch of water. Potting soil is much wetter up to top, so will wait until saucer and potting soil dries out before watering again. Estimate after just one day is i will probably only need to water every three days. If anyone else has done similar way with Nursery containers, share your experience, please.

Trapped a rabbit yesterday, but ground is so dry not many gophers this year.

was out at the asparagus bed this afternoon harvesting and the chiggers are <were> out in force along the bricks, while there a potato beetle
landed, it never made off the brick. started to water the eggplants sitting on top of a leaf was a mexican bean beetle dispatched it with no mercy.
you would think with last years cold winter it would have killed them off...not

I know what you mean... caterpillars have been especially bad here this year (the adult moths too). I told my wife that I was thinking about having the place aerial sprayed as the are defoliating the woods.

It has been so dry here the last year that our bug population has been decimated. We usually have a lot of flycatchers and Phoebes flying around, as well as other types of birds pulling bugs out of the grass and weeds, but very scarce this year.

can handle every bug, but chiggers are the worst those little red s.o.b bites can be hell if they have bitten you in the wrong spot if you get my drift.

I remember Chiggers from back in Kansas, before we migrated in 1936, but do not recall seeing or being bitten by them in CA or Idaho. Maybe because we have so many Tax bites out here we just do not have much feeling left.

I was wrong, as i Googled them and Chiggers are world wide, but i guess the reason i have not seen them is we do not sit on the front porch and front yard and visit with the Neighbors on summer evenings like we used to do, since we have Radios and TV;s and other things to do.

Been a while since I posted so I figured I'd fill you guys in on the progress so far this spring. Here's a few pics of my raised beds as they sit as of about 4 days ago. Sorry about the sideways pics - it's late and I can't figure out how to fix em..

Picked loquats for jelly on Sunday (pictured) and another 6 gallons for wine on Wed. Also managed somehow to win this cool new swing for the yard at my company picnic!

Tied up the tomatoes for 3X, knock down another barn swallow nest & replace a broken hanging basket hanger... then the storms started.

Yesterdays storms were pretty bad... While we welcomed the .9" rain (we probably had more, but when it's nearly horizontal it doesn't go into the rain gauges) the wind was pretty damaging. The average wind was 22.8 mph & there was a gust that registered 115. The corn is pretty much laying flat & there are a lot of shredded leaves on the garden plants, not to mention downed tree branches. I'll be trying to save the garden today & then cleaning up the homestead for days...

Dang it, the wind even broke off 2 of the 5 Texas Star hibiscus stems... it was 3.5' tall...

Had to stake down some jalapeno and bell pepper plants. The wind has been non stop for 2 weeks here. Finally got some much needed rain early this morning. Supposed to be more on the way.

Snapped a quick pic when I got home from work yesterday evening to show the recent growth. Everything is doing well. The tomatoes have grown over a foot in exactly one week. The grape tomatoes are at least 4 feet tall and VERY full and bushy. I thought the cages I built would be plenty sufficient but it looks like the plants may outgrow them.

@w_r_ranch hate to hear you've lost a few Texas Star hibiscus.

@45 ACP can't believe how quick everything is growing for you. are you doing weekly feedings?

No, not really. Just good dirt and mushroom compost. I did apply ONE feeding of Miracle Grow mixed into my water bucket about 3 weeks ago, but other than that I've just been watering once a week.

found out this morning will be heading to columbia,sc for a week .....gotta love a notice...grrrr. will be hanging 975' of 2" and 350' of 3/4" air line, installing 2 30 hp compressors, air dryer, 900 gallon receiver tank. needless to say ran around all day gathering everything we will need. so after getting home watered the plants, and shortly will be working on a watering/ harvesting schedule for the wife. the next couple days will have to get everything here in ship shape before leaving sunday morning.....
